Zion overlook project

This little project is in Zion National Park. Roy Madeson and I worked on this for seven weeks. We first dug the footings, poured them and then laid up the block. Then the concrete guys poured the sidewalk. That is Roy and Blake in the picture. We worked with Eddie Lopez and Stephanie Loud on this job.

This is the new stonework on the stairs matching the 1929 work.
We then laid up the stone on the south side, matching the old 1929 work as closely as we could. This is the new stair landing and new A/C pad area.

We were able to break up this boulder that had fallen into a narrow part of the road and use it in the wall. It was an exact match for the color we needed. Architect was Kim Campbell. Overseeing the job for the NPS was Jim Butterfus.

Metal Gate

The grandsons came over on a Saturday so we built a dragonfly out of leftover bits of metal laying around the shop. For the eyes we went of Ace hardware here in Hurricane and bought some marbles. We used some leftover paint and here it is welded on top of the new gate.

I wanted to build a small gate for the front entryway at my place. So I used some lightweight pipe and some rod and welded up this nice little gate. I am still working on it, but its getting there.

Metal gate

Kimbal Gardner had some scaffolding and he was nice enough to give me some of it so I could recycle it into a gate. These pictures show what it looked like before, during and after construction. I bought some additional metal from Scholtzen products here in Hurricane. I used my fork lift to hang it up. It is designed as a bump gate. You just bump it with the bumper of your auto and it swings open.

Summer 2012

I have been quarrying stone this summer with Brad Quinn and Roy Madison. This is really interesting work. This is very physically demanding work. The upside is you can eat as much as you want and you will still lose weight!  Seriously, you do get in good shape after a couple of weeks of this.

Grand Canyon Rig

I needed to rig at a place where I could not back into the water very far so I borrowed some roller tubes from Michael Denoyer and used them to roll the boat into the water. Here are some pictures of the set up in my yard. It worked great a week later at Diamond Creek in the Grand Canyon. The trailer has steel  rollers bolted to the tail. While traveling down the highway to the launch area  the roller tubes are deflated,  then blown up to roll the boat into the river.

This boulder was too big for Allen Lee to move around, so we split it in half for him.  Brad Quinn, Allen and I used feathers and wedges to split it open.

I put stone onto this house. I had to match the stone already on the house and that was a little tricky. It is  harder to copy  work than you might think. I blended it in and you can not tell where the old left of and the new starts. Thanks to Rick and Patrice for this project.

CCC camp stone column restoration

These stone columns were built by the CCC back in the thirties. For some unknown reason they never capped them so the elements were slowly tearing them apart. I capped them and while dong so noticed the retaining wall stones around the north column were coming apart. So I took a day and with the help of Brian who works for the town of Leeds, we reinforced and put the wall back together.  Thank you to LoAnn Barnes, George , Jean and Allen for getting this together. Thank you to the fair town of Leeds for the opportunity to work on this fine project.

Rockville entry

I helped Brad Quinn to place these stones and build the stone  sidewalk in front of a Rockville, Utah home. Simple , but real nice work.
